How do you define success?
This question has been weighing heavily on my mind lately.
Again, how do you define success?
Winning arguments ? (knowledge is power)
Through monthly/yearly income ? (money, money money!)
Through material possessions ? (I’m so fancy, you already know!)
Through marital status ? (And they lived happily ever after)
Through completing tasks more quickly than your so called “competitor(s)”? (Watch me whip! Watch me nae nae!)
Yikes! So many questions…Seriously though..these questions are extremely valid and important to deal with. It reveals what we are running towards. It reveals what are hearts desire is. It reveals what we value and what we think is garbage.
I am confident that, if we evaluate the answer, we will find many things about ourselves that we need to adjust in order to grow in our relationship with Christ. I know that I did.
Do not get me wrong….Desiring knowledge is not bad. Wanting to earn money is not bad. Wanting the latest thing on the market is not bad. Wanting to be married is not bad. Having a competitive personality is not bad.
Where we go “bad” so to speak is…when we start to define success by these things.
Our success, as Christians, should be defined by how much we LOVE. Our goal should be to use our passions to make the Lord tangible to those around us. We should call ourselves successful when we die to ourselves and choose to FORGIVE instead of bitterness. When we choose to have JOY instead of anger or frustration. When we choose to be PATIENT instead of rude or anxious. When we choose to ENCOURAGE instead of making people stumble. When we choose to be GRATEFUL for what we have instead of longing for what we don’t have.
After all, the things on earth are temporary. Our minds forget things we have learned. Money comes and goes. Material things can be stolen and/or broken. Relationships sometimes end and people grow weaker.
Love is not tempoary. Loving people is a powerful thing that makes a permanent impact, my friends. It makes an impact as we bring heaven down to earth. We are called to be the salt and light of the earth. We are called to be in the world not of the world. We are called to preach the gospel.
Church: we already know what we are called to do.
One of the most important questions within the Bible:
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” ~Matthew 22:36 (NIV)
Jesus responds: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. ~Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV)
Again, I ask: How do you define success?
I pray that we rise up and LOVE as we have never loved before. Love the Lord and our neighbor as the Lord has loved us WHILE WE WERE YET SINNERS. In other words, I pray we are all SUCCESSFUL in the eyes of Lord Almighty.
Be Blessed! Be encouraged ♥♥
