In the book of Mark, we find Jesus explaining: “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade” ~Mark 4: 30-32 (NIV)
This explanation is valuable because Jesus emphasizes the size of the starting journey of faith in comparison to the end product. The mustard seed is the smallest seed in the ENTIRE earth. However, the end product is that it becomes the largest of ALL garden plants.
How does this apply to our lives today? Glad you asked 😉
First: We need to realize that the seed is the living word of the Lord. The mustard seed is NOT our faith. You see, earlier, Jesus explains the parable of the sower and states “The farmer sows the word” (verse 14). Jesus continues to make the connection between the seed as the word of the Lord.
Second: We need to recognize that it take time, dedication through struggles, and steady faithfulness for the seed to grow stronger and, ultimately, into the largest garden plant. A seed needs water, sunshine, good soil, and food for proper development. The water, sunshine, and food is also the word of the Lord. This means that the soil is representative of our heart, soul, and mind. The care of the seed is not EASY work. This is especially true, since we have a known oppressor consistenly attacking us.
Third: Understanding the first two things, we need to recognize that our walk with the Lord is a journey that starts with the Word of the Lord. The Word has been given to us and planted in our hearts. Therefore, we need to maintain the seed that has been planted in our lives by spending time with the Lord. It is the only source that can make our faith grow stronger and healthier. The bottom-line is that we are spiritually DEAD without the Lord’s presence. As we learn more and more about the Lord by spending time in his word, our faith also increases.
JESUS essentially becomes more and more REAL.
Paul writes: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” ~ Hebrews 1:11 (NIV)
So, now, I want to challenge you to conduct a self examination of your walk with the Lord. Where do you stand with your Faith? Are you weak? Are you strong?
> If you feel weak, I want to encourage you: The Lord is not finished with you. Start by planting a mustard seed in your mind, soul, and heart. It’s okay to start small. It may take some painful, uprooting of unhealthy weeds. It’s okay. Start small. Finish the race that the Lord has for you. You CAN do it!
The Lord is all about that finish line, which take a good base 😉 haha
> If you feel pretty strong in your Faith, I want to encourage you: Enjoy the fruit that has naturally produced by your dedicated, hard work. Share the fruit with and plant seeds in the lives around you. Speak Life! Share what the GOOD Lord has done in your life!
Who knows? A forrest of strong trees (aka good, healthy community) can be beautifuly created by the Power of the Holy Spirit.
It all stems from a small mustard seed.
Take care of it and it will eventually take care of you.
The Lord is a such an awesome designer 🙂
